Sable Island is a long and slender island of sand located far out to sea, approximately 160 km southeast of Canso, Nova Scotia. As the only exposed portion of the outer continental shelf, the island is a geological and ecological rarity, a unique fragment of Canadian geography.
Sable Island is home to a population of wild horses, which are now among the world’s few wild horse populations that are entirely free of human interference. Since 1961, the Sable horses have had legal protection under the Sable Island Regulations of the Canada Shipping Act, which states that no one shall “molest, interfere with, feed or otherwise have anything to do with the ponies on the Island.”
The Sable Island horses are the descendants of animals brought to the island during the late 1700s. Introductions of small numbers of domestic horses continued sporadically during the 1800s and early 1900s. The present-day horses are well-adapted to their life on this isolated sand bar.
